"Four-in-five (81%) of British dogs aren't receiving the recommended level of exercise for their breed. In fact, most dogs only receive half of the recommended walking-time each week putting their long-term health at serious risk"

History of Chelsea

Chelsea is an area of west London bounded to the south by the River Thames, where its frontage runs from Chelsea Bridge along the Chelsea Embankment, Cheyne Walk, Lots Road and Chelsea Harbour. Its eastern boundary was once defined by the River Westbourne, which is now in a pipe above Sloane Square tube station. The modern eastern boundary can be said to be Chelsea Bridge Road and the lower half of Sloane Street, including Sloane Square where it meets Belgravia. To the north and northwest, Belgraviafades iBelgraviaton and South Kensington and the area north of the King's Road as far northwest as the Fulham Road is part of Chelsea. The district is now part of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. From 1900, and until the creation of the Greater London in 1965, it formed the Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea in the County of London.

Chelsea originated as a Saxon settlement. The word 'Chelsea' is probably derived from Anglo-Saxon Cealc-h3ð = "chalk wharf". The first record of the Manor of Chelsea precedes the Domesday Book and records the fact that Thurstan, governor of the King's Palace during the reign of Edward the Confessor, gave the land to the Abbot and Convent of Westminster. Abbot Gervace subsequently assigned the manor to his mother, and it passed into private ownership.

Henry VIII acquired the manor of Chelsea from Lord Sandys in 1536, (Chelsea Manor Street is still extant). Both Catherine Parr and Anne of Cleves lived in the Manor House, Princess Elizabeth (the future Queen Elizabeth I) was a resident, and Sir Thomas More lived more or less next door at Beaufort House. James I established a theological college on the site of Chelsea Royal Hospital (which was founded by Charles II).

By 1694, Chelsea — always a popular location for the wealthy, and once described as "a village of palaces" — had a population of 3,000. Even so, Chelsea remained rural and served London to the east as a market garden, a trade that continued until the 19th century development boom when the district was finally absorbed into the metropolis. The street crossing what was know as Little Chelsea, Park Walk, linked the Fulham Road to the King's Road and continued to the Thames and Local Ferry down Lover's Lane, renamed Milmans Street in the 18th century.

Like Kensington, Chelsea has been from time to time the residence of many individuals of high rank, who were attracted to it on account of its nearness to the Court, and its easiness of access at a time when the roads of the suburbs were bad, and the Thames was the "silent highway" to families who could afford to €keep their barge. So far as rank and station are concerned, perhaps the first and foremost of its residents was the Princess (afterwards Queen) Elizabeth. After her father's death, Miss Lucy Aikin tells us, in her "Memoirs of the Court" of that sovereign, the princess "had been consigned to the care and protection of the Queen Dowager (Katharine Parr), with whom she usually made her abode at one or other of her jointure houses at Chelsea, or at Hanworth, near Hounslow."

The King's Road was named for Charles II, recalling the king's private road from St James's Palace to Fulham, which was maintained until the reign of George IV. One of the more important buildings in the King's Road is Chelsea Town Hall, a fine neo-classical building containing important frescos. Part of the building contains the Chelsea Public Library. Almost opposite is the Odeon Cinema, with its iconic facade, which carries high upon it a large sculptored medalion of the now almost forgotten William Friese-Greene, who claimed to have invented celluloid film and cameras before any subsequent patents.

Chelsea Flower Show
First held way back in 1852 the show started life as the Royal Horticultural Society’s Great Spring Show and was held in Kensington. In 1913 it was moved to Chelsea’s Royal Hospital and has been held there almost every year since, making it a British institution. The acreage of the show has steadily increased since the 70s meaning more gardens, more plants and more space for the 157,000 people that descend on Chelsea each May.

The highlight of the show is always the Great Pavilion, where growers and nurseries exhibit new plants in incredible colourful displays – this is where you can see the exotic, the interesting and the unusual. Exhibitors prepare for months to bring the best blooms to the show making it a kind of horticultural Crufts.

Perhaps of most interest to those of us with less gardening knowledge than just a desire to create a lovely outside space are the show gardens. Created by the World’s very best garden designers picked from hundreds of applicants the show gardens are there to provide inspiration for everyone from the expert with five acres to the novice with a ten square foot back yard. Not only is the Chelsea Flower Show a source of gardening inspiration but also provides a chance to escape from London’s fumes and busy streets.
